Pink Gum

Eucalyptus fasciculosa. Almost exclusively found in SA. Beautiful species. Was good to get up this one in Mt Barker when we did. Found two large branches with serious cracks running across them (one started failing as I went out to prune it which put the wind up me). So removed those safely before they did damage to the rest of the tree and the surrounding property.

Reduced these dead branches in to a safe point and put coronet cuts in the ends. This is where we try and replicate natural branch failure with a chainsaw. This is excellent habitat for little critters to live. It also increases surface area at the point of failure helping fungi and decay causing organisms to get involved, which in turn speeds up the process of hollows forming.

The load of the branch is all gone so these dead stubs are safe as houses.
